sincerely, your dead lover
You used to whisper to me
through speckled nights
like a pin being pulled, then dropped—
crashing down onto the cold concrete
five
four
three
two
one second before the explosion
that convinced us
our September sun was bursting.
I know you have a tattered poster of
BARNARD’S STAR
reminding you that, from those
6 light years away,
we are still running [with popsicle syrup sweat
painted down our fingers]
through fields before they turned suburbs,
before our hometown turned someone’s nightly news
and before I turned ash.
When the bombs hit the neighborhood,
the swing set and the park benches,
they took away
your roof / your water / your lover.
And you could not hear me yell:
I can not see barnard’s star —
or any others— from under
the rubble.
When their bombs dropped,
all they spared was
your duty to deal with the mess.
